Everything we do starts with an idea. We started The Northern with the idea of combining a creative agency and production house. It would enable us to do anything we think of. It worked. Above all, we focus on delivering thoughtful, honest content and interaction for brands. Ideas that work.

We’re independent, collaborative, and international. We live in Nova Scotia, Canada. We work everywhere, from Iceland to China, the United States to Ghana. We’ll work with you wherever you are.

NORTHERN + HALIFAX MOOSEHEADS

The Halifax Mooseheads is a storied hockey franchise that resembles an NHL team more than its rivals in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. The team has produced 13 first-round NHL draft picks, including Nathan MacKinnon, assistant captain of the 2022 Stanley Cup Champion, Colorado Avalanche.

Moosehead Breweries was the founding owner in 1994. In 2003, Bobby Smith, 1978’s first-round NHL draft pick, bought the Mooseheads. But the logo never changed. Until now.

Updating a logo with 28 seasons of brand equity and fan worship behind it was a challenge. How much change is enough, but not too much?

In reimagining the main Mooseheads logo, we retained its shape and simply gave the moose a cleaner, more modern look. Honouring the original. Then we added a secondary logo celebrating Halifax. It features the city’s most unique landmark: Citadel Hill with its Town Clock.

Finally, we redesigned the uniforms to accentuate the new logo, adding a shoulder patch to display the secondary logo, plus classic stripe patterns, piping, textures, and laces. Both a refresh and an embrace of hockey history.
